NATIONAL HR SYMPOSIUM ORGANIZED BY KIIT SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT, KIIT UNIVERSITY AND NHRD

The National HR Symposium organized by KIIT School of Management, Bhubaneswar and National HRD Network was inaugurated on 11th January, 2013. The theme of the two-day Symposium is ‘Look East: Leveraging Human Capital For Prosperity’.

The Symposium was inaugurated by Shri Naveen Patnaik, honourable Chief Minister, Govt. of Odisha along with Dr.Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT University and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS); Mr.Sourav Daspatnaik, Regional President (East) and National Board Member, NHRDN, Chairperson, Skill Development Task Force, Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry Director, Neuerth Holdings AG; Dr. T.V. Rao, Founder National HRD Network, Chairman, TVRLS and Adjunct Professor, IIM Ahmedabad; Mr. S.Y Siddiqui, National President-NHRDN and COO, Administration (HR, IT , Finance and COSL)- Maruti Suzuki India Limited; Mr.Kamal Singh, Director General NHRDN. Dr. Saroj Mahapatra, President National HRD Network(NHRDN), Bhubaneswar Chapter delivered the welcome address.

 

Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder, KIIT and KISS, spoke about the HR journey of KIIT and KISS from a small beginning to one of the biggest educational conglomerates in India within a short span of 15 years. KIIT University now contributes a sizeable number of highly skilled students in varied fields like management, engineering, medical sciences, rural management, etc. He focused on how KISS has been able to educate and provide means of sustenance to 20,000 tribal children and initiate them into a mainstream by empowering them with education to lead a better life. He further spoke about how KISS is a fine example of Human Resource Management.

Mr. Sourav Daspatnaik, in his welcome address, said that the HR Symposium was conceptualised to build up some consensus on issues like bringing up the Gross Domestic Happiness, providing  amenities and opportunities to the people of eastern states of India. Here, the prosperity is not percolating down to the grass root level leading to creation of urban poverty which is expected to increase in future . Thus the population surplus eastern region also needs skill development to prosper.

Delivering the first keynote address, Dr. T. V. Rao appreciated Odisha, the work of Shri Naveen Patnaik citing how the state of Odisha has undergone a sea change in the last seven to eight years. He said that there should be recognition of humans as assets in order to leverage human capital. He spoke about building human capital in four target groups – corporate and policy makers, educationists, doctors and the national bodies. The corporate and policy makers need to focus more on long term goals rather than short terms ones. For all these target groups, the focus should clearly be on an integrated approach to development and service delivery rather than a silo-based approach. Doctors could do well to provide integrated health services instead of focussing on only specialized services. Lastly, the local national bodies should focus on enhancing the skill levels leveraging technology and promoting entrepreneurship in rural areas. There needs to be a change in the mindset, from inaction to action and from divisibility to unity.

Mr. S.Y Siddiqui in his keynote address said that India is predominantly a young country and that we need to focus on exports and a stable growth rate. Law and order and social unrest that lead to concerns for foreign investors should be improved. There needs to be a paradigm shift from conventional education to professional and vocational education. He appealed to the young minds to have a proactive attitude and passion to bring in change and improve capability and commitment level. The leadership also needs to shift from a command and control model to ethical, inspirational and transformational.

Shri. Naveen Patnaik in his address said that if people leverage their potential to do remarkable things, they can improve the quality of life. Human capital is the backbone of economic development and human development and thus, Human Development Index (HDI) needs to be improved with good standards of health, education and moral values. Looking at the Eastern region, he said that we have a large population with a lot of potential. Bhubaneswar has emerged as a knowledge hub with IIT, NISER, IIIT, National Law University and KIIT University etc. being set up. He said that equity, excellence and inclusion are the focus areas of higher education now.

A souvenir commemorating the occasion was released by Shri Naveen Patnaik. Mr. Kamal Singh, Director General NHRDN proposed the vote of thanks for the session.

The post lunch session began with the panel discussion, “Creating new opportunities in the East – An HR perspective”. The panel consisted of Mr. Marcel Parker, Chairman, Ikya , Mr. Vineet Kaul, Chief People Officer, Hindalco Industries Ltd, Mr. Nihar  Ranjan Ghosh, Executive Director(HRD), Retail Business, RPGSG Group (Spencer’s retail), Mr. Manas Ranjan Panda, Executive Director, SAIL & President NHRD Chapter, Ranchi, Mr. Prince Augustin, EVP Group Human Capital & Leadership Development, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.

The panellists said entrepreneurs should effectively utilise the raw materials and should develop the CSR activity, diversity and empowerment skills moreover,  the challenges faced by eastern region, innovations required for vigour investment and FDI investment. For the development of economy in Eastern Region, high quality of education, improvement in discipline, effective utilisation of people in corporate sector and human development in terms of knowledge and skills are required.

The session was followed by “CEO’s perspective of the East-Leveraging Resources and Building New Paradigm for Prosperity”, moderated by Mr. Bimal Rath, Founder and Executive Coach, Senior Management Facilitator and Advisor, Think Talent. Eminent speakers like Mr. Harsh Jha, Managing Director TATA Metaliks Ltd. and Chairman, TATA Metaliks Kubota Pipes Ltd., Dr. Santrupt Mishra, CEO, Carbon Black Business and Director, Group HR, Aditya Birla group addressed the gathering in the special session.

Mr. Bimal Rath observed that the eastern part of India will like to see a significant quantum jump in terms of employability and GDP contribution.

Dr. Santrupt Mishra said that real innovation needs to come in agricultural sector. Prosperity in manufacturing and service sectors go hand in hand with agricultural sector. He also said that we need to create the comfort level in the minds of the CEOs that East is the right place for investment. Mr. Harsh Jha said that sustainable economic growth needs a sound and effective governance system, good infrastructure, resources and competent HR. He added that East is fuelling the growth of rest of the country. The session concluded with a question answer session.

In the evening, all the guests and delegates were treated to a bouquet of traditional dance forms performed by the students/alumni of KISS and KSOM.
