The conference received over 150 abstracts and 100+ full papers from India and five other countries. 70 papers were presented during the conference.

Prof. Tapan Panda, Pro-VC, KSOM & KSRM, gave the welcome address, followed by Prof. K K Ray, KSOM, Conference Convenor who set the context. Prof Saranjit Singh, VC, KIIT DU,  delivered the conference address, while Mr. Ramesh Chandra Joshi, Director (Finance), Nalco Ltd. presented the keynote address.The Book of Abstracts of unveiled by Prof. Saranjit Singh.

Shri Ramesh Chandra Joshi delivered a keynote speech at the event, underscoring the imperative role of sustainability, diversity, and inclusivity in shaping the future of management. He stressed the necessity for organizations to embrace these principles to ensure competitiveness and resilience.

The panel discussion was expertly moderated by Dr. Mrinal Chatterjee, a seasoned journalist turned media academician, with a keen interest in sustainability. The panel included Mr. Bibhu Prasad Mishra, Vice President at Jindal Steel and Power Ltd., Mr Sanjog Sahu, co-founder of Mati Farms, and Dr. Supriti Mishra, a distinguished expert in Corporate Strategy and CSR.

Dr. Jyoti Prasad Mukhopadhyay, Associate Professor of Economics at IFMR Graduate School of Business, took centre stage as the guest speaker for the Research Workshop on ‘Panel Data Analysis.’ conducted post lunch. This comprehensive session covered a spectrum of topics, including Panel Data types, Models (Fixed and Random Effect Models), the Selection of Appropriate Models, and their practical applications.

The second day (23^rd Feb) of the conference was reserved for a paper presentation. Presenters from across the globe presented papers on various themes related to Circular Economy & Environmental Sustainability, Ethical AI and Technology & Stakeholder Engagement and Environment-Social-Governance (ESG), Empowering Marginalized Communities, Social Impact & Sustainable Innovation, Sustainable Business Practices & Green Initiatives Organizational Culture and Environment-Social-Governance.

The valedictory session of the 4th International Conference on Management Research (ICMR) was conducted on 23rd Feb 2024 at the KSOM auditorium. The welcome address was delivered by Dr. Bhuwandeep, Associate Professor & Co-Convenor, followed by the address of the Chief Speaker Ms. Sujata Praharaj, Columnist. Felicitation of the Chief Speaker was done by Prof. Tapan Panda, Pro VC, KSOM & KSRM and Prof. Suvasis Ghosh, Dean, BBA program of KSOM.

Vote of Thanks was delivered by Prof. K K Ray, Convenor ICMR 2024. The International Conference on Management Research 2024 proved to be a platform for meaningful discussions, insights, and collaboration, setting the stage for future academic and industry endeavours.

The convention was inaugurated by the keynote speakers Prof. P.G. Chengappa, Former Vice Chancellor, Bangalore University; Prof. Aldas Janaiah, Associate Dean, Agricultural College, Hyderabad; Prof. P. P. Mathur, Vice Chancellor, KIIT University; Prof. Anil Bajpai, Director, KIIT School of Management and Dr. Ashok K. Sar, Dean, KIIT School of Management. The inauguration was followed by the release of the Book of Abstracts and “Parikalpana”.

The convention was started by a welcome note by Prof. Bajpai. He stressed upon the importance of farming in India. He mentioned that the agricultural sector has a lot of interesting facts about how the growth has happened in the agricultural sector over the years. Stating the importance of agriculture, he also suggested introducing a new curriculum on Agribusiness in KIIT School of Management.

Prof. A. K. Sar introduced the theme of the convention by highlighting the importance of creating such forums for sharing and utilizing knowledge that is helpful for understanding the importance of emerging agribusiness. He sighted that this topic can be categorized into two areas – Productivity and Growth in Agriculture, and Redefining Productivity in Value Chain of Agriculture.

Prof. P.G. Chengappa highlighted that it is essential to make agriculture economic and viable. He gave an overview on the changing context of Indian agriculture, components and schemes of the agribusiness, linking farmers to agribusiness and constraints of agribusiness. He stated that agriculture has evolved from subsistence to semi-commercial and commercial mode. He highlighted that the declining share of agriculture in GDP is a leading issue. He highlighted that various threats like indebtedness, climatic changes and uncertain global environment lead to farmer deaths which pose a fallback on the agricultural sector and agribusiness in India.  Hence reforms in agribusiness is necessary, most importantly emphasis has to be given on empowering the producers i.e. the farmers with knowledge, information and capability, enhancing organized retailing, evaluating the option of working closely with the private sector and attracting large scale investments.

Prof Aldas Janaiah outlined his discussion on the growth and potential, size and strength, policy environment and constraints of agribusiness. He mentioned that technology has played an important role in the growth of agricultural sector over the years. He mentioned a few revolutions like the Green Revolution, White Revolution, etc. that have paved the path towards significant growth of food production and increase in the per capita food production of India. He stated facts and figures on the size and strength of the agricultural economy – where he highlighted that the total size of agribusiness is 47 lakh crore owing to around one-third of the National GDP of India. He ended his discussion by emphasizing on the fact that urbanization, fertilization, globalization and increase in the consumer income have been forces of growth in the agricultural sector. The inaugural session was closed with the vote of thanks of the NMC Convener.

The panel discussion was moderated by hon’ble Director – KSOM, Dr. Anil Bajpai.

The first speaker was Mr. Basant Nayak. He started his speech, with some quotes from Gandhi & Martin Luther King, concerning the empowerment of the masses. He emphasized on the sustainable food production & was concerned about the inequality in proportion for all the sections of farm production.  He put forward some interesting statistics of India’s stand in Milk, Egg, Meat & various other farm products. Mr. Nayak also introduced few challenges like that of the saturation in production, concentration of large intermediaries without adding value, disintegrating buying, selling and lack of appropriate infrastructure and huge gaps in capability development.

The Next speaker was Mr. Ravi. Nawal. He questioned the fact that, why India can’t have more number of vertical garden, firms and terrace farming. The use of technology, the advanced use of logistics can play an important part in more & more sustainable agri-business in India.

Mr. Sushant K. Khuntia opined for the 4 major participants in agri-business & for its sustainable development, viz. large corporates, entrepreneurs, farmers & hobby gardeners. His words indicated that he was worried about the mindset, psychology of Indian farmers. According to him, they are still unaware of the proper market problems, the location of a profitable market, the alternatives and the procedures to address these.

The final speaker was Mr. Subrat Ranjan Prusti. He is an eminent agriculturist. He gave live examples from his very own orchards, farms and Gardens. He has contributed significantly to the development of not only the farm labourers, farmers but also the development of barren fields to fertile lands. He has significantly used the adapted new technologies from abroad (namely Israel) & adopted them to Indian conditions & emphasized for more such initiatives. He has initiated water pipelines from River Mahanadi for preparing the lands and also sourced that water for all those farmer through whose land the pipe flows. It is indeed a significant partnership model.

The panel discussion was followed by Q & A sessions, from the members of the audience and was ably answered by the panelists.

In the afternoon two presentation tracks were held where around 20 researchers presented their paper on different aspects of sustainable agribusiness. The sessions were chaired by Prof. P. G. Chengappa, Mr. Basant Nayak, Prof. A. Janaiah and Mr. Sushant Kishore Khuntia. The best paper award was given after evaluation of all the presented papers. Dr. Ajith P. was declared the winner of best paper award.

On the second day an action research workshop was conducted at MGM-Agriventures Ltd. Near Tangi by Prof. Janaiah. The participants were exposed to sustainable agribusiness with specific domains- Floriculture, Polyfarm, Solar energy and rainwater harvesting.

The convention saw a huge amalgamation of different industry practitioners, academicians, faculty members and students from different B-schools.

Prof. Bajpai in his welcome address spoke about the relevance of VUCA in the present scenario. It was followed by the release of book of abstracts by the dignitaries.

Prof. A. K. Sar introduced the theme of the convention setting the platform for a wholesome discussion. Consistent and continuous learning and its application can help us be competitive in a VUCA world. To be successful Volatility should lead to Vision; Uncertainty to Understanding; Complexity to Clarity and Ambiguity to Agility.

In his address Air Marshall(Retd.) R.C. Bajpai,  chief guest of the convention said that even though VUCA originated from the US military organization, it affects us in the present day context. For the development of a nation it must overcome VUCA both internally and externally. A clarity of objectives and goals is necessary for strategically formulating polices and executing them. He cited examples of hostility and  aggression created by the neighbouring countries and how the proxy war is a fit case of VUCA. The adversities can be overcome by strong leadership, professionalism, honesty, integrity and dedication.

Mr. Arbind Mishra, keynote speaker stressed primarily on the climate change, risk assessment and mitigating the risk strategically . He also talked about the geopolitical surprise brought by terrorism, Fukushima nuclear disaster and natural calamities like the Jammu & Kashmir floods and Kedarnath tragedy resulted in VUCA. He said that in-fact a concept like VUCA affects everyone of us. To successfully address a VUCA situation either in the political, social or business environment a robust leadership has to emerge which takes ownership and is conscientious. For example the US Military was successfully able to mitigate a VUCA situation created after the 9/11 terrorist attacks by rapidly adapting their strategies and policies related to internal security.

In his address Mr. K.K. Mohanty highlighted that even in a volatile scenario Indian managers can produce better results. According to him the acronym VUCA is an abstraction which is our own making. With the new government in existence the corruption has come down. In future our investigating authorities should move from corruption check to performance check. Indian managers today are priceless because they stand out  in successfully meeting VUCA challenges and are patient in addressing the dilemmas and eliminating the uncertainties.

The convention which was attended by industry practitioners, academicians, faculty members and management students from various B schools, held several technical sessions with research papers presented on the different aspects of management.

Brief about the Technical sessions held during the 8^th National Management Convention

Track-1- Winning Strategies for Human Resource Management

The track covered the different aspects of human resource management in the present VUCA world .The session had about 10 presenters from institutions like IIT Kharagpur, Bhartiya Vidya Bhava, KIIT School Of Management, Brahma Kumaris and NIST (Berampur).

 Track-2- Winning Strategies for Operations & Finance

The track covered the different aspects of operations and finance used in day-to-day operations of a business and how to make it better in this turbulent scenario. Eight presenters had presented the paper on the theme of the track. We had presenters from N.I.S.E.R, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Utkal University and KIIT school Of Management.

Track-3- Winning Strategies for Manufacturing sector

The track covered about how manufacturing sectors is affected by VUCA at present and what ways should be followed to face the same. In total we had ten presentations for the track from institutions like: Institute of Hotel Management, IIT Kharagpur , Berhampur University, Sai International college of Commerce & Economics, and Biju Patnaik College of Science and Education.

Track-4- Winning Strategies for Social & Services sector

How digitalisation in the present scenario has changed the way we are working today and how we are graduating from manpower resources to technology was discussed during the session. We had four presenters for the session from institutions like Sri Sri University, KIIT School of Engineering and KIIT School Of Management.

KIIT School of Management’s (KSOM) 7^th National Management Convention on “The Dynamics of the Education to Employment Journey: Opportunities and Challenges” hosted on the 21^st and 22^nd of February 2014, attempted to capture the practical challenges and emerging opportunities in bridging this seemingly large gap between education and employment, through research papers, case studies, white papers, and conceptual studies.

In the inaugural function of this National Convention, Dr. Achyuta Samanta, founder of KIIT and KISS welcomed the eminent invitees, delegates, guests, faculty and students while the Dean, Dr. Ashok Sar, introduced the theme of the convention to the audience.

The Director, Prof. Anil Bajpai, Vice Chancellor, KIIT University, Prof. P.P. Mathur and Registrar, KIIT University, Dr. Sasmita Samanta, addressed the gathering. Ms. Shobha Mishra Ghosh, Senior Director, Education, FICCI and Shri Debabrat Mishra, Director, Hay Group, India delivered the keynote address.

The convention saw large participation from the academia and the corporate from across the country. More than 60 selected papers were presented on sub-themes such as

• Challenges faced by Educators in Management Education/Technical Education/Life Sciences
• Challenges faced by employers in manufacturing and services
• Developing viable talent management models in educational institutions
• Redefining the Education to Employment Journey: Voices of the Youth/Students.

The institution conducts such conventions and conclaves throughout the year not just to expose the students to the real challenges faced by the industry, but also to bring back focus into doing research in various fields of management to create new insight and knowledge.

Amid the twin contradictory phenomena of opening up of the Indian industry and increasing resistance of Industries in many parts of the country, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) remains high on the agenda of the Indian Corporate. The Convention aims to capture the issues and challenges in addressing the inherent paradox of sustaining performance and integrity in CSR activities in India.

In his welcome address Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Hon’ble Founder KIIT & KISS spoke about the prevalence of CSR since the ancient times. Dr. Samanta has himself set a landmark in corporate social responsibility by his unique and noble initiative of educating and giving livelihood to twenty thousand tribal children through Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences. He praised the staff of KIIT University for donating 3% of their gross salary to KISS.

The Dean of the school, Dr. Ashok Sar, introduced the theme of the convention.

Prof. C. V. Baxi, Professor in Public Policy and Governance, MDI Gurgaon, in his key note address defined CSR as creating durable long term value and to create and recreate moments of excellence. He shared three basic concerns of corporate social responsibility. The first being the agenda of CSR, the second, the issues and agenda implementation and the third, identifying and defining the problem. He also talked about some of the misconceptions about CSR and said it is not limited to writing few reports or setting a department or allocating some funds to CSR activities.

Mr. Nikhil Pant, Chief Programme Officer, NFCSR, IICA in his address talked about the new Company Bill 2011. Part of the bill says every company must have a CSR Committee of the Board with at least three board members that will frame CSR policies for the activities to be undertaken by the company, the expenditure to be incurred. He talked about the importance of having CSR training, certified professionals and developing data bank. He concluded by laying emphasis on larger alignment of CSR and sharing of resources.

The event was inaugurated in the presence of eminent guests such as Mr. Praveen Gupta, Chief General Manager, SBI and Prof. B.B. Bhattacharya, Former Vice Chancellor, JNU and Distinguished Professor, IIM Lucknow. Prof. Ashok Kolaskar, Vice Chancellor, KIIT University and Prof. Ashok Kumar Sar, Dean, School of Management were also present. The delegates included professionals from manufacturing and service sectors, Academicians, Research Scholars and Consultants from across the country.

Addressing the inaugural function, Prof. B.B. Bhattacharya, Chief Guest of the Convention, spoke about KIIT as a remarkable example of how education is being promoted through dedication. He emphasized the inequality of incomes in India which can be reduced through the expansion of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). Countries like Taiwan and Brazil have grown through the boom in MSME sector, he added. He expressed his concerns about the fact that the knowledge created by Business schools are not used locally, but are rather drained into MNCs.

Mr. Praveen Gupta, the Keynote Speaker of the convention, spoke about the unique features of MSME which includes generation of employment for the unskilled workforce, use of local resources and innovative means for reducing costs. He outlined the key issues facing the sector, which includes lack of capital, knowledge of the market, issues in getting land or governmental clearances. He said even though financial institutions are willing to lend to the SME sector, equity contribution from the entrepreneur is still a major issue. He also pointed out the fact that many promoters aren’t aware of the collateral-free loans offered by the banks today.

In his address, Prof. Ashok Kolaskar stressed on the fact that most of the employment today is through micro, small and medium enterprises. He gave examples of how corporate have elsewhere handheld fledgling entrepreneurs and turned them big, something which can emulated and replicated in a state like Odisha as well.

Introducing the convention to the audience, Prof. Sar highlighted how the MSMEs are contributing profoundly to the economic development of the country. The profitability of MSMEs depends on the efficiency, quality of the products and services, and the deployment of updated technologies in the value chain, he added.

The Convention spans two days with a total of four tracks that would cover four subthemes under the main theme, namely: Challenges of MSME Sector and their Implications, Ways to Improve the Overall Health of MSME Sector, Government Policy & Technological Support for Sector Efficiency and Skilled Manpower & Allied Issues in MSME. Each of these tracks would be chaired by an eminent guest from the industry and would have research paper or case study presentations by the delegates.

There were four technical sessions. Track one was chaired by Dr. S.R.Mohapatra, Dean, management-BPUT and the session coordinator was Prof.P.R.Sahoo. At the outset session chair delivered a keynote speech on the various challenges faced by MSME Sector of India. Then there were eight paper presentations. While evaluating the papers, and coordinating the overall presentations at the end the coordinator summarized the entire event.

Similarly, the next session started with the speech with the session chair, Mr. Aswini Kumar Dash, DGM (BD), Orissa State Finance Corporation. Then the session coordinator Prof. R. N. Subudhi led the session forward. In total six presentations were there on the theme “Ways to improve the overall health of MSME Sector”.

The third session was on the theme “Govt. policy and technological support for sector efficiency”. At the outset the session chair Dr. Raj Kishore Panda, Director, NCDS delivered the keynote speech on the theme. Then the session coordinator Prof. Jitendra Mohanty led the session forward. There were eight presentations in total.

The fourth session was on the “Skilled manpower and allied issues in the MSME”. The session started with the speech of chair Prof. S. K. Mohanty, Vice Principal, Institute of Entrepreneurship Development, Odisha. Then the session was conducted by session coordinator Prof. Sikta Pati. There were five papers in total.

The closing ceremony was held at 4:45 PM, 18th February’ 2012. The session started with the summarizing speech by Dean, Prof. Ashok K. Sar. This was followed by award of certificates to all paper presenters. Ms. Astha Dewan, Asst. Professor, Sri Ram College, Delhi University, received the best paper award. The best paper award was decided on the basis of the evaluation done by the session chairs and coordinators.

In his welcome address, Dr. Samanta said Innovation holds the key to the success of businesses. Taking the example of KISS he said if the social value generated by the institution can be quantified, it would be a “serious social business innovation”. The dean of KIIT School of Management, Prof. Ashok Sar introduced the convention to the audience and highlighted how “Innovation” is different from “Invention”. He added that inventions convert cash to ideas whereas innovations convert ideas to cash.

Mr. Ganguly said Innovations are not made out of thin air and are always based on what is already there. He said organizations need to constantly innovate to make their “products better, the country different and the services better”. On the changes brought about in his own company, he spoke about how the organization repositioned itself from a plain beverage brand to a “way of life” for the youth of resurgent India.

Mr. Verma spoke about the rapid pace of technological innovations and how it is redefining the world we live in today. He added that innovation is really a “six inch problem” alluding to the human brain where all ideas are conceived. He said that if we are going to participate in the transformation that is happening around us, we need to “think different” and question “what there is and what it could be”.

The inaugural session was followed by paper presentations that would continue for the three days of the convention.
