This is a one-of-a-kind initiative among educational institutes in India. Konfidant is a program aimed at providing the MBA students an opportunity of mentoring from eminent corporate leaders during their academic journey at KIIT School of Management (KSOM). Through the program students are connected with industry stalwarts who take over as mentors to a small group of students assigned to them as mentees. The program is managed by Prof Mohar Banerjee Biswas, who is the Konfidant Chairperson for KIIT School of Management. The program has a strong support and guidance from the KSOM leadership team, led by Dr. Suva Kanta Mohanty, Director KSOM and Dr. Sumita Mishra, Dean MBA KSOM. This year the program saw 18 industry leaders collaborating with KSOM as corporate mentors and guided more than 200 MBA students. The corporate leaders were impressed with the process of the program and the idea of mentorship and commended the students and the school for managing and engaging with industry on such a large scale.

The program started with an inaugural ceremony where the context was set by Prof Mohar Banerjee Biswas, Konfidant Chairperson. Dr. Suva Kanta Mohanty, Director KSOM, welcomed the guest to the program and explained the concept of mentoring done by KSOM over the last few years. Dr Saranjit Singh, Vice Chancellor, KIIT University, addressed the gathering and explained the long term mentoring initiatives that the university has been taking. He also stressed on the philanthropic initiative undertaken at KISS University and urged the guests to visit the university. This uniquely designed platform has MBA 1 students mentored by these eminent leaders from industry while the students are undergoing their management course. The corporate leaders act as mentors to the students and play an important role in nurturing students’ career aspirations, counselling them on career goals and helping them prepare for placements. By providing information and encouragement, the mentors guide the students, that eventually results in improved professional and academic outcomes. This mentor-mentee relationship is structured to be a long term one and develops over time. The relationship continues till the students pass out of KSOM. Each mentoring team, comprising a corporate and faculty mentor, are assigned 8-10 mentees, so that mentors are able to do justice to each of the mentees.  The mentors are expected to have their first interaction with their mentees face-to-face at KSOM on 18^th Sep, which helps the mentors and mentees to spell out their respective expectations from each other. In view of the pandemic, the second time round it is happening virtually. This first interaction provides comprehensive feedback to students with regard to their individual strengths, weaknesses and areas of improvement.  Post the initial interaction at KSOM, mentors might choose to have regular contact over email, WhatsApp and telephone depending on situational requirements. The mentors are expected to connect with each student mentee regularly to monitor their growth and progress.

In the first phase of Konfidant held on 3^rd Feb, seven industry experts were invited, namely; Meenaa Sharma, CHRO, Reliance Securities; Jitender Panihar, Head-HR, Talent & Org Development, Healthkart; Pramod Shah, Head – Business HR & Campus Relations, Tata Capital; Rahul Ghatak, CHRO, BIC Cello (Writing) Group of Companies; Subrata Chatterjee, Head HR, Arcelor Mittal; Sudhir Dhar, CHRO, Motilal Oswal; Uday Kiran Podipeddi, National Talent Acquisition & Employee Relations Head, Reliance Capital.

These experts initiated the mentoring process for 70 students, with each mentor being assigned 10 students from MBA I. Faculty members were also assigned to each mentor to facilitate each session. Each mentor interacted with their mentees over the day, guiding them on nuances of handling group discussions and personal interviews. Mentoring focused on placement skills like personality development, communication, academic gaps, placement process, handling interviews and career skills like career counseling, job opportunities, industry identification, finding job fit. The day ended with mentors preparing individual development plans for their mentees based on assessments. As this mentor-mentee relationship is structured to be long term, the mentees will further engage with their mentors over email, chat messenger and telephone depending on situational requirement. This will help them continuously monitor the progress of their mentee and would lead to timely feedback. The interactions will be monitored by the faculty members who were part of Konfidant.

It is proposed to organize the next phase of Konfidant on 24^th Feb. The purpose is to induct all the students from MBA I as mentees to industry mentors.

Mr. Govind Sharma of Sony Entertainment was so impressed with the programme that he wrote a blog on it in his  blogspot. This being just the start to a life-long relationship between the mentors and their mentees, students feel empowered with the potential thrust that this programme has created.
