Prof. K.K. Ray, Convener of the Finance Conclave, welcomed the gathering on behalf of Prof. (Dr.) Achyuta Samanta, Hon’ble Founder, KIIT & KISS, and introduced the dignitaries. Setting the context, he emphasized the need for a resilient financial ecosystem for India’s journey towards mission Viksit Bharat 2047. He highlighted that the priority development areas would be AI-driven systems, ESG investing, UPI, PM Jan Dhan Yojna, digital currency and cybersecurity. Prof. Kumar Mohanty, Director, KSOM, delivered the Welcome Address, highlighting the Finance Conclave as a unique platform for students to engage with industry leaders. He emphasized KSOM’s strong industry-academia balance and noted that such conclaves bridge the gap between theory and practice. Prof. Mohanty encouraged participants to actively engage in the day’s deliberations.

Prof. Saranjit Singh, Vice-Chancellor, KIIT DU, highlighted Odisha’s emergence as a Fintech hub through global collaborations and initiatives like creating a Integrated Global Financial Technology Capability Hub in Odisha. He said that KIIT’s Fintech labs and industry tie-ups have supported over 2,500 students with internships and offer and projects worth ₹900 crores. He urged students to embrace innovation, ethics, and sustainability and contribute to shaping India’s financial future.

Mr. Suresh P. Manglani, Executive Director & CEO, Adani Total Gas Limited, delivered the keynote address. He stressed that a strong financial and infrastructure system is vital for a developed India. He pointed to the double-engine model and initiatives like Aadhaar, UPI, PM Jan Dhan Yojna, and GST as key drivers that have strengthened inclusion, transparency, and economic growth by combining digital and physical ecosystems. Mr. Manglani highlighted India’s ongoing digital transition through reforms such as DigiYatra and CoWIN. On the regulatory front, he underlined the role of SEBI, IRDA, RBI, and CCI in building trust, supported by innovations such as T+1 settlement and instant trading that are reshaping financial markets. He also emphasized the importance of integrating the unorganized sector and noted how UPI has empowered small businesses through secure, low-cost digital payments.

Looking ahead, Mr. Manglani highlighted initiatives such as the Digital Rupee, DigiLocker, KYC portals, blockchain, AI/ML integration, GST 3.0, and the vision of “One Nation – One Tax” as crucial in shaping India’s financial future. Concluding his address, he stressed that transparency, innovation, and resilience will define India’s journey to becoming a developed nation and urged students to see themselves as active contributors to mission Viksit Bharat.

The inaugural session concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Prof. Arvind Tripathy, Dean, KSOM, who expressed gratitude to the speakers, alumni, and participants, and encouraged students to make the most of the conclave’s learning opportunities. In his address, Prof. Ray emphasized how rapid technological advancements are fundamentally transforming the financial industry. He pointed out that these innovations are driving faster, more secure transactions and enabling more informed decision-making processes.Prof. Ray highlighted how innovations like blockchain, decentralized finance (DeFi), artificial intelligence, big data, and quantum computing are reshaping finance by offering enhanced personalization, efficiency, and security. He also stressed the importance of robust cybersecurity measures and regulatory frameworks in ensuring financial inclusion.

Prof. Suva Kanta Mohanty, Director, KIIT School of Management, in his welcome address, elaborated on the central theme of the Konclave, placing particular emphasis on blockchain technology, digital transformation, transparency, and decentralization in the financial industry. Prof. Mohanty highlighted the importance of understanding customer needs and actively exploring disruptive ideas and collaborative solutions to meet these evolving demands.

Prof. Kumar Mohanty, Director, Industry Engagement & Faculty Development, KIIT DU, introduced the keynote speaker, Mr. Pratik Oswal, Head – ETFs and Index Funds, Motilal Oswal. Prof. Mohanty, commended Mr. Oswal’s contributions to the finance industry and highlighted the significant role his leadership has played in advancing financial products, particularly in the realm of exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

In his keynote address, Mr. Pratik Oswal provided a thought-provoking discussion on the growing impact of ETFs and index funds, focusing particularly on the U.S. wealth management industry. He noted that ETFs now account for 16% of the mutual fund industry and have experienced rapid growth over the past five years, leading to significant disruption within traditional fund management.

Mr. Oswal explained that traditional fund management, once highly manual, has now become largely automated, with 35-37 funds operating based on algorithm-driven systems. This technological shift has simplified decision-making, allowing technology to determine optimal investment timing and strategies with minimal human intervention. He stressed the importance of timing in disruption and evolving customer preferences, drawing parallels with Uber’s transformation of the taxi industry. Mr. Oswal posed a critical question: “Do customers truly need financial advice online?” He further emphasized the role of technology in meeting customer needs in today’s digital-first environment.

Reflecting on Motilal Oswal’s long-standing history since 1987, Mr. Oswal highlighted the company’s continuous innovation in equity research, online broking, and ETFs, which has enabled it to remain competitive as the third-largest company in profitability. He also noted that 70% of the company’s business now operates through mobile apps, driven by a deep understanding of customer trends. Furthermore, he discussed how companies like Zerodha and Angel One have disrupted the market, and attributed Motilal Oswal’s success to bold experimentation, self-education, and the founders’ willingness to take calculated risks.

The inaugural session concluded with felicitation of the guests and a vote of thanks by Prof. Sumita Mishra, Dean, KSOM. She expressed heartfelt gratitude to all the dignitaries, faculty members, students, and support staff for their tireless efforts in making the Konclave a success.

They emphasized on the importance of ESG in sustainability, expressing deep concern about the environment and the adverse effects of overusing resources. The panel highlighted the interdependence of economic expansion, financial inclusion, and sustainability, and the role of modern finance in harnessing technology to integrate these aspects. The panel concurred that government and corporate commitments to sustainability is critical along with the need for cost-effective and environmentally friendly solutions.

The second panel discussion was on the topic – Resilience for Sustainable Inclusive Growth –    Industry Perspectives. The respected panellists were Ms. Sandhya J (Moderator), Chief Financial Officer, Narayana Health; Mr. T. N. Sivasubramanian, Chief Financial Officer, Shibaura Machine India Pvt. Ltd. The panel highlighted India’s economic growth, infrastructure improvements, and financial inclusion in the manufacturing industry. They discussed on the changing dynamics in the manufacturing sector, focusing on cash conversion and the role of MSME vendors, especially within ‘Make in India’. The panel offered insights on diverse topics including green bonds, economic resilience, and investment potential in India while discussing profitability and financial inclusion.

The inaugural session was followed by two panel discussions. The first panel discussion was on the topic: Financial Sector Outlook – Navigating the Sustainable Landscape. The panel highlighted the fact that ESG is quite an important and critical subject for the world’s business. The construction business should be the first to address this issue with efficient use of water and zero discharge into the environment. The panel concurred that investors are getting smarter and looking more towards earning ethical profit related positively to environmental goals.

The second panel discussion was on the topic – Sustainable Development: Prospects and Challenges. The panel discussed about the relevance of the topic for MBA graduates. They talked about the pros and cons of green energy and the issues in finding qualified professionals despite rise in population. The panel ended their discussion by advising students to focus more on knowledge than running after money. Sustainable business goals can only be achieved with the help of knowledgeable and aware individuals.
The panel discussions concluded with a Vote of Thanks and felicitation of the guests by Prof. Sumita Mishra, Dean, KSOM. Prof. K K Ray was the conclave convenor.

The Konclave started with a very engaging panel discussion on the topic – “Financial Sector Outlook: Disruptions and Accelerating Transformation”. The panel comprised of Mr. Amit Mohanty, MD & CEO, JM Asset Management; Dr Tirthankar Patnaik, Chief Economist, NSE (Moderator); Mr. Kumar Ayashkanta, Chief Investment Officer, Wipro; Mr. Nikhil R Sohoni, Sr. VP – Gr. Finance & Treasurer, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.; and Mr. Vivek Kumar, Economist, QuantEco Research. The panel was steered by Dr. Tirthankar Patnaik, Chief Economist of the National Stock Exchange of India. The panel discussed about disruptions caused by the pandemic and how technological innovations have helped many economies turn the tide to a certain extent. The panel discussed about the importance of liquidity, human resources, government intervention, technological innovations and the role of central bank in the economic development of the country. The panel discussed the role of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) in keeping a check on inflation and their strict focus of growth was applauded. It also concurred that maintaining liquidity and increasing the policy rate is vital to take the Indian economy and the financial markets forward. It was discussed that banks today are well capitalized, NPAs have been well provisioned and the corporate deleveraging signal that the Indian economy is on the cusp of higher growth in the coming years. There is a need for investment in cyber security and in digital infrastructure, and the use of big data that will act as catalyst in driving the growth of the economy. The panel agreed that the pandemic has been a big learning curve, and they also concurred on the fact that though technological innovations have helped, human intervention is still important.

Dr. Satya Narayan Misra, Dean, KIIT School of Management, welcomed the esteemed guests on behalf of Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Hon’ble Founder, KIIT and KISS. He introduced everyone to the Industry Engagement Activities of KSOM and set the context of the conclave.  He highlighted different fiscal stimulus packages initiated by the Government and also shared his views as to how a proactive government can come out of economic depression.

Dr. Ajit Ranade, Chief Economist & President, Aditya Birla Group, was the keynote speaker. He spoke about the role of financial sector in the growth of an economy. Mr. Ranade gave an overview on the causes of Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and drew an analogy of the GFC to the current pandemic. He also spoke about the IPO financing issues in India and its merits and demerits, including the oversubscription of the shares and the leverage effect of the IPO financing issues. Dr. Ranade emphasised that there is a need and an incentive for the RBI to ensure that savings from non-financial sector move to the financial sector. His address also covered the various aspects of digital innovations in the payment sector including the advent of Fintech companies, Payment Banks, UPI and the Cryptocurrencies.

The second panel discussion was on the topic – “Decoding Sectoral Outlook: Emerging Economic Paradigm and Way Forward”. The panel talked about the doubling of credit growth, post-covid boom in the IT industries, green fuel and importance of the reduction of carbon emission and the expected increase in E-commerce companies post pandemic. The panel also discussed about the importance of generating more capital for greater growth while focusing on the paradigm shift in work culture and work routine.

The second half of the conclave consisted of eight workshops with topics related to MSMEs, Stock Markets Performance and Economic Reality, Retail Investors and the Investment Environment, Product Innovation and Distribution in the Banking sector, Indian Insurance Sector, Digital Renovations in the Financial Sector, Covid-19’s impact on Commercial Banking and the Credit Growth, and Mutual Fund Industry.

In the welcome address, Prof. Jnyana Ranjan Mohanty, Registrar, KIIT Deemed to be University expressed his views regarding the theme of the conclave and mentioned the significance of reforms and policy changes taken under Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Prof. Sasmita Samanta, Pro Vice Chancellor, KIIT Deemed to be University in her inaugural address, flagged the importance of innovation. She mentioned that disruption is inevitable and only innovation can make a difference. Citing views of thought leaders, she visualised emergence of a new normal situation and emphasised the need for an eco-system of researchers to combat such situation whenever it arrives.

Mr. Vikram Gupta, Founder and Managing Partner of IvyCap Ventures Advisors Private Ltd. were the keynote speaker. He spoke about the slew of optimistic trends which is happening in the country related to GST collection, Fintech and other financial policy initiatives. He mentioned how the Indian currency has remained stable and shared his views with respect to Venture Capital. He felt India being the 3^rd largest start-up ecosystem with huge global investments coming in; the growth opportunities in the future are immense.

The first panel discussion was on the topic – “Re-imagining Value Creation – Innovation and Agility in Financial Markets”. The panel comprised of Mr. Sovan Mandal, Chief Business Officer – India Mortgage Guarantee Corporation (IMGC) who moderated the discussion. The other esteemed panelists were Mr. Siddhartha Dash, Executive Vice President -UTI AMC Ltd.; Mr. Sabyasachi Rath, CEO and Executive Director – Karvy Financial Services Limited & Mr. Swarup Mohanty, CEO -Mirae Asset.

The panel discussed about how the various financial sectors operate and allocate resources and how to re-think value creation. The panellists spoke about the Mutual fund industry, Debt market, MSME segment, Fintech and the innovation and agility in each of the sectors that can drive value creation. They also shared their views on the regulatory perspective taking place in the current scenario and the impact thereon.

The theme of the 2nd Panel Discussion was- “Re-imagining Economic Reforms – Planting Seeds for Long-Term Growth”. The moderator of the discussion was Mr. Kalur Srinivas, Senior Vice President – IDBI Capital Markets and Securities Ltd; and other esteeemed speakers were Mr.Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Group Chairman – Inditrade (JRG) Group of Companies; Mr. Siddharth Sanyal, Chief Economist- Bandhan Bank; Ms. Hina Kamra, Executive Vice President – Edelweiss Real Estate Fund & Mr. T.N. Sivasubramanian, CFO – Shibaura Machine.

The panel discussed about the impact of Covid-19 on India’s growth and stated the importance of demand side support in the near to medium term for economic revival. The panel believed that there is a need for rapid infrastructural development and emphasised the availability of long term capital to achieve it. The panellists also shed light on the reforms in the financial sector and debated on the areas of reforms that have been beneficial for the economy and the areas where a lot more has to be done.

The conclave delegates had a general view that though the economy has suffered and there are challenges, government is taking initiatives to mitigate the situation and brighter days are ahead.

The second half of the conclave consisted of eight workshops for the students with topics related to MSMEs, Investor Psychology, Start-up Funding, Digitization of Financial Services, Revival of Financial health of the Economy, International Capital Flows to Emerging Economies and Stock Market Investment.

Prof. S.N. Mishra, Dean, KSOM set the context of the conclave. He said that this topic is extremely pertinent in the current economic scenario. He was of the view that these are interesting times for the Indian economy and even though there has been a change in political dispensation, there is a continuation on the commitment to free market. Prof. Hrushikesha Mohanty, Vice Chancellor, KIIT DU welcomed all the guests and hoped that the discussions throughout the day would give an insight into achieving the $5 trillion target.

Prof. Sudipto Mundle, Distinguished Fellow, NCAER and keynote speaker of the conclave was of the view that the 2019-20 budget should be reviewed and revised in order to achieve a windfall for the economy. Changes like the recent revision of corporate tax rates would help in achieving a strong positive impact on growth in the medium to long term.

This edition of conclave had two panel discussions, followed by Finatix: Innovative group coaching sessions by eminent finance experts.

The first panel discussion was on the topic – “Reviving the Animal Spirit: Charting a Course for Growth”. The panel comprised of Ms. Mythili Bhusnurmath, Economist; Mr Rahul Bajoria, Chief Economist, Barclay’s Investment Bank; Mr. Saugata Bhattacharya, Chief Economist, Axis Bank; Mr. Piyush Garg, EVP & CIO, ICICI Securities and Mr. Pramod Kasat, Ex. Indusind Bank, Investment Banking, The panel started discussing about the slowdown of the Indian economy and the various factors affecting it. Although the panel agreed about the limitations of fiscal space, it was felt that fiscal and monetary policy at best addresses the cyclical causes of the slowdown but the structural causes would require a more nuanced policy response from the Government.

The second panel discussion was on the topic – “Known Terrain yet Uncertain Path: Challenges in Financing the Growth”. The panel comprised of Ms. Madhavi Arora, Lead Economist, Edelweiss Securities; Mr. Amit Tripathi, CIO, Fixed Income, Nippon India Mutual Fund; Prof.  Arun Kumar, Chair Professor, Institute of Social Science; Mr. Sandeep Bagla, Associate Director, Trust Capital and Mr. R. Kannan, Head, CPM, Hinduja Group. The panel deliberated on the challenges to finance the growth. The discussions underlined the financial sector problems pertaining to NPAs, NBFC crisis and the resulting slowdown in credit off take. The panel concluded that there is a tremendous scope to attract foreign savings to supplement the domestic savings that can lead to increased investment in the economy, especially in the infrastructure sector to feed the growth.

The conclave was one of the three national level conventions which are annually organized by KIIT School of Management in the areas of HR, Marketing and Finance. This year’s Finance conclave provided students the platform to interact with the business leaders for holistic learning. The conclave began with keynote addresses by two eminent personalities from the field of Finance and Banking.  Mr. Gopalaraman Padmanabhan, Chairman, Bank of India, spoke about how technology has changed the way traditional financial systems work. He further stressed upon how API, UPI, peer-to-peer lending, Aadhaar-linked services, block-chain and cryptocurrencies are transforming and reshaping the future financial services thereby bringing a paradigm shift in customer expectations and demands.

Mr. Shubhashish  Gangopadhyay, Research Director, India Development Foundation, addressed a wide range of issues from shrinking demand for muscle power to increasing demand for other human attributes in different sectors. He discussed how new jobs are getting created in knowledge-intensive sectors like medicine, education and professional services in the UK market.

The first panel discussion was on “Is FinTech Transformational?” The panel comprised of “Ms. Deepa Rath, Business Head, Invoicement ; Mr. Upendra Patro , CFO, Essar Oilfield Services India; Mr. Ravinder Bhatia, VP- Finance and Supply Chain, DXC Technology; Mr. Vikas Chadha, ED & CFO, Berggruen Hotels and Mr. Amit Singh (Moderator), ED, Avendus Capital. The panel deliberated on whether transformation is actually happening in FinTech or is it still in evolutionary stage? The panel concurred that FinTech assisted the service sector and provided a digital platform which connected MSMEs to multiple financiers. They were of the view that it will eventually give an edge to business and make it more agile and efficient. The panel also observed that challenges like lack of infrastructure, regulatory norms and security of data remained at the forefront.

The second panel discussion was on “Commoditization or Consumerization: The Future of Financial Services.” Industry experts in the panel comprised of “Mr. Samir Mohanty , COO, Avanse Financial ; Mr.  Satya Mahapatra , Sr. VP, Analytics and Financial Risk in Barclays;  Mr. Sambit Mohanty , Country Head, South Asia, Accuity; Mr. Chandra Vikram Prahladka, CFO, Devyani International and Prof. Praveen Mohanty (Moderator), Professor, KIIT School of Management. The panel gave a lot of importance to consumerism by stressing on the requirement of need-based financial commodities. They were of the view that consumer needs digital services combined with consultancy and expert advice from the firms. The panel discussed at length on anti-money laundering, swift system, IFSC and cross modelling.

The conclave was one of four national level conventions which are annually organized by KIIT School of Management in the areas of Marketing, HR, Finance and Operations Management to bring industry closer to the academia. This year’s Finance conclave provided students with an opportunity to interact with business leaders and policy makers for holistic learning. Seven workshops related to Finance were also conducted as part of the conclave by industry stalwarts. The conclave was received enthusiastically by industry professionals, academia and students.

Finance Conclave

Dr. Achyuta Samanta in his welcome address highlighted the impact of policy changes on business prospects. He also talked about the viable financial model of Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences which is highly appreciated by policy makers of the country.

Setting the context, Mr. Jitendra Panda elaborated on the philosophy behind the formulation and implementation of financial policies across various markets. He went on to emphasize on the workings of major policy initiatives such as Demonetization, GST. Make in India, Digital India, and Ease of doing Business etc.

Prof. Hrushikesha Mohanty talked of the different challenges faced by the players in the financial markets against the backdrop of recent policy changes and emphasized on the urgent imperative of up-gradation of the skill sets of the millennial to meet these challenges. He expressed confidence in the growing industry – academia collaborative arrangements to do the needful in this regard.

The first panel discussion was on : “Policy Interventions: Impact on Stakeholders’ Business Performances” which was moderated by Ms. Lakshmi V. Iyer, CIO – Fixed Income & Head – Products, Kotak Mahindra Asset Mgt. Co. The other panelists were Mr. Subrat Das, CFO, SembCorp Green Infra Ltd.; Mr. Srinivas Baratam, MD, Kriscore Financial Advisors; Mr. Mahesh Gupta, Director – Finance, Appster; and Mr. Sanjeev Goswami, Founder Director, Fractal Capital.

Ms. Iyer articulated the complex challenges facing our economy because of recent policy changes. Mr. Subrat Das talked about cost of funding for recapitalization of banks, and how GST affected the power sector financial dynamics. Mr. Baratam  discussed about policy on domestic and cross border transactions , role of inflation in cost escalation of projects and the increasing role of private borrowings in funding of projects. Mr. Gupta spoke about the impact of artificial intelligence on mode of doing business in banking, FMCG, hospitality and healthcare. Mr. Goswami talked about various policy initiatives’ impact on the country’s GDP.

The second panel discussion was on the topic  “Policy interventions: Business Challenges and Innovations” which was moderated by Dr. Rajeev Uberoi, General Counsel and Group Head Legal & Compliance, IDFC. The other panelists were Ms. Renu Rajani, VP – Financial Services, ADM Service Line, Infosys; Ms. Sangeeta Sumesh, ED & CFO, Dun & Bradstreet Technologies and Data Services Pvt. Ltd.; Mr. Vikas Sarda, CFO, Unitus Capital and Unitus Seed Fund; and Mr. Aakarshan Mookim, Head-Business Finance (FP&A/Commercial   Finance), Macmillan Education.

Dr. Uberoi gave an overview on the historical perspective of world’s economy. He emphasized on India being one of the most attractive destinations for doing business. Mr. Sarda discussed on the far reaching impact of demonetization and GST in the economy. He said that the recent policy changes will help combat the uncertainty in the business ecosystem and ensure much needed stability and growth. Ms. Suman said that much needed changes have been introduced in the Indian Tax system of late. However, she expressed the hope that India would be much better off if the best tax practices followed in a few developed countries are adopted. Mr. Mookim talked about digital payment policies. He was of the view that regulations should be responsible and business friendly. The discussion culminated with Ms. Rajani articulating on the policy changes in IT industry and its effect on other businesses.

The conclave also had six workshops for the students with topics relating to contemporary banking, mutual fund, micro-insurance, corporate governance practices and digital innovations.

The conclave was a part of three National Level Conclaves in the areas of HR, Marketing and Finance conducted by KIIT School of Management to create a forum for the exchange of ideas and thoughts on pertinent themes of the current era. 8th National Finance Conclave

Setting the context, Mr. Debasish Mohanty elaborated on the recent trends in country’s financial sector highlighting how the technological disruptions, demographic & regulatory changes are impacting the financial sector. He emphasized the importance of cashless economy which will curb corruption and solve taxation problems. Mr. Anand Sinha spoke on the challenges that the financial sector is facing today and the possible way outs. He elaborated on trajectory of reforms over past three decades. He also talked about the readiness of banks in terms of compliance to Basel III norms.

Mr. Raamdeo Agrawal shared his journey of creating wealth from nothing to Rs. 1000 crores. He talked about the nuances of trading in the stock market. He emphasized on value investing rather than speculation. He shared some of the analytical frameworks that he has been using for creating wealth in the stock market. He concluded that everybody can be successful in life with the right mix of skill and passion.

The first panel discussion was on Banking sector reforms which was moderated by Prof. S. N. Mishra. The first panelist Mr. Anand Sinha spoke about the newly constituted Monetary Policy Committee and its functioning. Mr. Abhishek Arun, Vice President, Paytm elaborated on the changes happening in banking sector highlighting how the recent technological advancement is helping the sector moving towards plastic money and cashless economy. Mr. Shishir Mankad, Executive Vice President, Corporate Banking, Axis Bank, talked about privatization of banks opening new roads for development of India.

The second panel discussion was on GST which was moderated by Prof. Anil Bajpai. Mr. Shohrab Bararia, Manager, Eastern Zone Head, Grant Thronton talked about elimination of cascading effect with equitable distribution of tax. CA A.K.Sabat, Partner, A K Sabat & Co. mentioned that GST will eradicate cartelization providing a robust and stable credit mechanism.

The final session of the conclave had nine informative and interactive workshops with thought-provoking discussions on topics such as Private Equity in India, Raising Funds & Scaling up a Start-Up, Moving towards Cashless Economy, Corporate Banking – What does it take to win?, Innovation in Financial Services, Changing Trends in Banking & Payments in India, Realizing the Make-In-India vision through Foreign Trade, Creating Wealth in Financial Markets and Infrastructure & Project Financing.
